Our teeth are constantly being covered with a clear, sticky film of bacteria, called plaque. As plaque collects, it forms a hard layer of tartar (or calculus) especially in hard-to-reach areas near the gum line and between teeth. Although you may do a thorough job brushing and cleaning between your teeth each day, your smile needs and deserves a regular professional cleaning, also known as a dental prophylaxis.
The registered dental hygienists at Dr. Abraham’s office will remove these hardened deposits with special hand or ultrasonic instruments during your professional cleaning appointment. After the teeth are cleaned, they will be polished with a mild compound to remove stains on the surfaces of the teeth. Then the hygienist will review proper home care instructions and a regimen that is customized to your individual needs will be devised in consultation with Dr. Abraham.
A comprehensive dental examination will be performed by Dr. Abraham which includes a thorough review of your medical history. He will also review diagnostic x-rays for detection of decay, tumors and for evaluation of tooth and root positions as well as proper assessment of bone levels surrounding the teeth. An oral cancer screening and periodontal evaluation will also be performed along with examination of your existing fillings and restorations and addressing any needs for areas of tooth decay. An assessment of your bite and any temporomandibular (jaw joint) problems will be reviewed as well as part of your examination.
